New portal helping Canberrans be smart and safe shoppers

Shane Rattenbury, MLA

A new fair trading online portal was launched today by Minister for Consumer Affairs Shane Rattenbury, providing a one stop shop for consumer and business fair trading information.

“The new portal comes at a great time as consumers and businesses alike are seeing increased activity with the festive season well upon us and the Boxing Day sales around the corner,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“This increased activity often prompts a range of questions from consumers when it comes to returns, refunds, gift cards and online buyer protections – particularly if a gift received is not quite right.

“Canberrans can now quickly and easily find tips and advice on these issues as well as other topics such as what to look for when purchasing kids toys for Christmas, recent product warnings and safety recalls, so they can make informed decisions as a consumer.”

Mr Rattenbury said unfortunately at this time of the years scams can also increase as the good will of the community is exploited.

“It is important to remember to read any fine print, research to check the legitimacy of a charity or company that may contact you and, if it doubt, don’t give your details out.

“The portal also provides a quick and easy way for the community to lodge a complaint or concern, including around scams. These will be investigated by Access Canberra as appropriate.”

Businesses as well as consumers will benefit from the new portal.

“The portal brings together resources and tools in the one place, saving time, and supporting businesses to understand their rights and responsibilities,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“It also outlines the proactive work of Access Canberra in the fair trading space and it will continue to grow over the next year as videos and resources are added and content is updated.”
