How long has light rail been planned? Are we rushing into it?

The Greens, and experts, have been working on light rail for decades. This isn’t a new project. As long as 20 years ago we were thinking about building light rail from Civic to the (then new) Gungahlin region. Various analyses have followed, from the public transport study a decade ago that found light rail to be both “economically feasible and beneficial”, to the 2012 design study on the Gungahlin to Civic transit corridor that compared light rail and bus rapid transit options and concluded that light rail “generates the best overall outcome for Canberra”.

Light rail is being built all over the country. With the Greens supporting its construction in Western Australia, in NSW, in Victoria… as our Territory grows, it’s time for us to invest in light rail here.
