The preselection of Alicia Payne for the seat of Canberra sets the stage for a real contest of ideas at the coming election, the ACT Greens said tonight.

Greens candidate for Canberra, Tim Hollo, said "I congratulate Alicia Payne on her preselection and look forward to a real contest of ideas on refugee rights, Adani's coal mine, lifting Newstart, political donations reform and more.

"We’re hearing loud and clear that most people in Canberra want change on these issues, and that change can only happen by electing Greens.

"After a decade of stable, progressive minority government in the ACT, Canberrans understand the incredibly important role of the Greens in pushing the constantly disappointing ALP to go further than they want to.

"I say to Canberrans, if you want an MP who will vote in parliament to close the camps and treat refugees with human decency, the only choice is to vote Green.

"If you want an MP who will vote to stop the Adani coal mine and take the advice of scientists and technology experts seriously, the only choice is to vote Green.

“If you want an MP who will vote to lift Newstart and support vulnerable people, the only choice is to vote Green.

"If you want an MP who will vote for political donations reform, support the right to advocacy and protest, protect civil liberties and close the revolving door with lobbyists, the only choice is to vote Green.

“Canberra can and should be a beacon for a better way of doing politics, not a symbol of politics-as-usual."
