Do we really need it? Canberra isn't that big.

Canberra is growing, and current projections don’t show it stopping any time soon. Although the light rail project will begin by connecting Gungahlin to Civic, it will service all of Canberra. The ACT Population is projected to increase by 50,350 people, reaching a total population of 390,100 people, by 2019. Light rail will not only help prevent future congestion as road users increase, but it will ensure that our growing city stays connected through a strong light rail network and other public transport services.

We know from other cities that if not properly managed, population growth can lead to urban sprawl and all the problems that entails. The earlier public transport infrastructure is installed, the smoother the transition will be for our city.
