Greens commit to level playing field for sport

The ACT Greens will put the community first by investing in sporting facilities, grassroots sporting events and sports promotion to keep Canberrans healthy and active.

“Sport encourages people to lead active and healthy lives as well as fostering a sense of community,” said ACT Greens spokesperson for recreation and sports, Shane Rattenbury.

“The Greens want to ensure that every Canberran can participate in community sports. That’s why we will provide $30,000 per annum in sporting fee and costs subsidies for low-income families.

“We will also improve and expand our sporting facilities by investing $2 million for upgrades and new facilities in growing areas such as Molonglo, West Belconnen and Gungahlin.

“The ACT Greens will fund a multi-courts facility for the Woden and Gungahlin regions and seek expressions of interest from the private sector to construct an ice rink.

“Canberra has become a choice destination for many large sporting competitions. The ACT Greens want to ensure that Canberra can continue to play host to events such as the Mont 24 hour mountain bike race, the ever popular Kanga Cup, and many more.

“The ACT Greens believe that everyone should be able to enjoy our incredible natural environment, sporting facilities and community sports events. That’s why we’re committed to making sure that sports and recreation activities are accessible for everyone.”
