Greens back home birth trial

The ACT Greens have strongly backed moves to trial publicly-funded home births in Canberra.

“We strongly support this trial, which is about making sure that women’s health choices are supported and respected as much as possible,” said ACT Greens health spokesperson Indra Esguerra.

“Home birth is a safe and healthy option for women with low-risk pregnancies. Most other jurisdictions already offer this as an option, and the ACT had its own home birth scheme in the nineties.

“Having a baby is one of the most intimate and rewarding events in a young family's life. I’ve spoken to so many mothers over the past 15 years who are frustrated that they have no longer had this option in Canberra.

“The ACT Greens have long supported a publicly funded home birth system so that women have the greatest amount of choice possible.

“Most other jurisdictions have already tackled the barriers to home birth to create safe and practical schemes. I am glad that after fifteen years the ACT has finally found a way forward that will support mothers and families who want to have simple, safe and planned births in their own homes.

“The Greens look forward to seeing the results of this trial – and supporting the program into the future,” Ms Esguerra said.
