Greens push for action on high speed rail

The ACT Greens have welcomed news that Consolidated Land and Rail Australia are pitching a high speed rail project to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

"The time has come for us to get moving and join other countries around the world in embracing clean and efficient high speed rail," said ACT Greens senate candidate Christina Hobbs.

"A simple start could be to direct some of the billions of dollars of federal funding away from polluting toll roads towards high speed rail."

The Greens' plan for fast track high speed rail connecting Canberra to Melbourne and Sydney includes establishing a High Speed Rail Authority.

"Both Labor and the Liberals have been all talk and no action on high speed rail.

"Australia and Antarctica are now the only two continents in the world where there is no high speed rail project underway. If we don’t start now, I’m worried the penguins will beat us to it.

"High speed rail is good for Canberra and good for Australia. The Greens will be keeping this issue on the agenda ahead of the election.

"Now that Consolidated Land and Rail are making a pitch to the Prime Minister, perhaps we'll see the Government finally commit to a serious, long-term plan for high speed rail," said Ms Hobbs.
